Wound Care

The role of the Wound care CNS is to provide support, advice and assistance to the nursing workforce within the Tairawhiti region – this includes the Primary Health sector. We review patients with complex wounds in the community and in the District Nurse clinic. We assess these patients using a variety of skills including Doppler assessments, compression bandaging and other specialised assessments.

We also provide a wound care service at the fortnightly Diabetic Foot clinic with other members of the Diabetes Services who include Jo Tietjen (Diabetes CNS), Robyn Briant (Physician) and Stuart Harris (Podiatrist).

For patients in hospital, due to clinic and community commitments, we have allocated one day a week to visit the wards. This is currently on Thursdays, but this may change depending on our workload. However, we will accept urgent in-patient requests for consultation on complicated wounds from Monday- Friday and we will respond as soon as practicable.

One of our roles as a CNS is to facilitate education in collaboration with the Education Coordinator, Robyn Dymock. This can take the form of study days, on-line learning packages or books/journals available in the hospital library.
